Service in action
Every student at Cal State Monterey Bay participates in our Service Learning program at some point during their education – it's a requirement.
In any given year, roughly half of our student body is enrolled in a course that incorporates an element of service. These students provide nearly 60,000 hours of service to the schools, nonprofit organizations and government agencies each year.
“Through Service Learning, I became more certain of who I am in relation to those around me, and the potential I have to be something more.” - CSUMB student
This program doesn't just benefit our community and partner organizations. Through service, our students get hands-on experience related to their major, make professional connections and deepen their understanding of social justice as it relates to their chosen field of study.
Cal State Monterey Bay's Service Learning program has been hailed as a national model and is the only university in the country to have received the Presidential Award for Community service twice. This award is the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to community service.
